| NEWS | The Indian government has said no to Genetically-Modified Brinjal for now. Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said "public sentiment is negative". He says more information is needed on the impact on human health and environment. The poor man's vegetable, brinjal, is in the midst of a hot controversy. India grows over 2000 varieties of brinjal, over 500,000 hectares of land for almost 4000 years. But the three states which grow more than 60 per cent of brinjal in India - West Bengal, Orissa and Bihar - are not open to the idea of introducing India's first GM food crop. |
VIEWS | Why during the last several centuries no new vegetable crops have been discovered. Same vegetables that our ancestors ate for over several generations are still consumed now. Same potatoes, brinjals, cabbages, Cauli flowers, Beans, potatoes, etc. Mr. Jairam Ramesh can engage our Scientists to identify new vegetables for consumption instead of budging to the pressures of US Industrialists in the embracement of BT Brinjals. This would also directly help the Government to bring down the prices of vegetables and arrest food inflation. |

The Opposition had staged a walkout when the Finance Minister announced the hike in fuel prices, demanding them to be rolled back. Some UPA allies were also a part of this walkout. |
VIEWS | Fuel price hike is not the issue. As our honourable MPs go to bed late in the night (many after midnight) after having hectic schedules at the Parties, Pubs, Drinks, Cards, etc they wake up very late in the next day morning missing their Morning Walks. So Parliament gives them a grand opportunity for all of them to keep physically fit by staging such WALK OUTs |

| NEWS | The government today said around 49 lakh cases of income tax refunds are pending with the revenue department. “Total number of pending refund returns (up to January 2010 is 49 lakh. The statutory time limit to process the return and issue refund in financial year 2009-10 is March, 31, 2011,” minister of state for finance SS Palanimanickam informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply. Normally after receipt of returns, processing of returns and issuance of refund is completed in due course, he said, addding however, difficulties are encountered in some cases due to various reasons like wrong PAN, illegible recording of address, incorrect particulars about bank account etc. Pointing out that processing of refund is a continuous process, he said, the returns received during 2008-09 would be processed by March 31, 2010. |
VIEWS | To put it simple, Government to devise a policy to adjust the Refundable portion of the previous year with the Payable portion of the current year so that the Assesses can be benefited instead of waiting for the Receivables from the previous year on account of excess Tax paid / deducted for the Current Year.
